Become a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist

You are always welcome to visit the temple.

Many meetings and chanting are held each month. By attending a meeting will help you learn about the practice, correctly pronounce Nam-Myoho-Renge-Kyo and become familiar with Gongyo (Sutra Recitation). Additionally hear the teachings of Nichiren Shoshu Buddhism from our Chief Priest.

If you are interested in learning about Buddhism or becoming a Buddhist,

Once you visit the Temple and decide to start your Buddhist practice, you can ask to receive the Gojukai Ceremony at our temple.

Acceptance of the Precept: Ceremony to become a Buddhist

“Gojukai” literally means the ceremony “to receive the precept.” Generally, it is the ceremony for you to receive the seed of happiness and become a Nichiren Shoshu Buddhist, and a member of Myoshoji Temple.

In Nichiren Shoshu, those determined to start their faith and practice of True Buddhism receive this ceremony from a Nichiren Shoshu priest.

During the ceremony, the new believer takes the Oath of Acceptance of Nichiren Shoshu. After reciting the sutra (Gongyo) and chanting Daimoku (chanting Nam Myoho Renge Kyo), the new believer receives the precept from the priest who is holding a Gohonzon (Object of Worship) in his hand. The new believer vows to uphold true Buddhism in this and all future existences through consistent practice and allow the seed of true happiness to grow and blossom.

The ceremony takes about 30 minutes.
